History and Purpose

Wilkinsburg Community Ministry (WCM) provides basic necessities, such as food and clothing, as well as other resources such as energy assistance to Wilkinsburg residents in need. The Wilkinsburg Community Ministry's programs has alleviated hunger and provided basic necessities for elderly, disabled, and disenfranchised residents of Wilkinsburg, PA for over 40 years.

WCM is a collaboration between twelve area churches, with members of the board representing each of the twelve churches. In 1968, a number of clergy and lay leaders from ten congregations formed the Board of Directors for the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry.

The unity of several congregations makes it possible for WCM to meet the extreme needs of poverty and hunger in our community and provide effective community services to all persons regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and creed.

Today, WCM is 501 (c) (3) organization comprised of 12 congregations, over 30 volunteers, 20 board members, and a part-time staff of 8 serving over 16,000 meals and 1,400 residents per year.

WCM programs include: Meals on Wheels, delivering meals Monday thru Friday to senior citizens and disabled citizens; Children's Meal Partnership, providing meals for school-aged children through after-school, summer, and special needs partnerships; Angel Food, distributing groceries at low prices for families and senior citizens.

WCM also has an Urban Survival Program that involves the following: Clothing & Furniture Donations, ensuring children and the needy have warm clothes; Emergency Food Pantry, distributing food on an as-needed basis; Holiday Food Drive, providing meals to families on Thanksgiving and Christmas; and Dollar Energy Assistance , helping families stay warm through the winter.
